Man hit, killed by patrol car ID'd

The man killed Tuesday evening when his car collided with a Houston police officer's patrol car in southeast Houston has been identified as Herbert Williams, 82, of the 6700 block of Foster.

Williams' Chevrolet Caprice was struck by a patrol car in the 3900 block of Cullen just before 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said Williams pulled out in front of the patrol car, driven by officer David M. Boling, 38, a 14-year veteran of the department.

Boling, who was on his way to assist another officer who had requested help, was southbound on Cullen when the collision occurred.

A police spokesman said the accident remains under investigation, but preliminary information indicates that the patrol car's emergency lights and siren were on at the time of the collision. There are witness reports that the lights and siren were not on at the time.

The HPD accident review board will investigate the crash, as it does all accidents involving patrol cars, the spokesman said.

Boling was treated at Hermann Hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries and released later Tuesday.
