HOUSTON -- A Houston police officer shot a man who put a knife to a woman's throat, police told KPRC Local 2. Houston police said Officer Tony Tomeo, a 13-year veteran, was called to the Aberdeen Apartments in the 3400 block of Woodchase Drive for a family disturbance early Thursday.

Investigators said Tomeo found a man and a woman fighting over a butcher knife.

The man put the knife to the woman's throat and Tomeo ordered him to put it down, but he refused, police said.

"Instead, he moves away from the female and starts getting into a crouching position with the knife, as if he is going to start moving toward the officer, in which he does," HPD spokesman John Cannon said. "At that time, after ignoring another verbal command to drop the weapon, the officer fires his duty weapon one time."

The man was wounded in the side. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and was released into police custody.
