Car Theft Suspect Dies In Mall Parking Lot Shooting

HUMBLE, Texas -- Police are investigating an accidental shooting outside Deerbrook Mall on Monday that left a car theft suspect dead.

Humble police said two people were spotted breaking into a car in the parking lot in the 20100 block of Highway 59 North at 11:55 a.m.

Police arrived and said they found the theft suspects getting into their vehicle, which was stolen.

Officers approached the car with guns drawn and the man in the driver seat started to back out, investigators said.

Police said an officer then "broke out a window with his handgun," and the weapon accidentally went off, killing the suspect.

The other theft suspect was arrested and taken to jail.

The officer was taken to the hospital after his hand was cut from the shattered glass. He has been with the Humble Police Department for about 15 years.

No names were released.

An investigation is under way.

No shoppers were injured during the incident.
