HOUSTON - An officer says he was forced to shoot a female robbery suspect in the parking lot of a southwest Houston apartment complex.

Police say the victim of an early-morning robbery drove more than a mile and followed two suspects who were traveling in a Dodge Neon to The Mills apartment complex on Bissonnet Street near the Sam Houston Tollway early Thursday morning. Once at the complex, the robbery victim contacted the Houston Police Department from a pay phone because his cell phone was allegedly stolen by the robbery suspects.

The robbery victim told police the suspects also took cash, a laptop computer and several other items from him.

Officers arrived to the apartment complex before 2 a.m. Thursday and found a woman holding a gun and standing in the parking lot by the white Dodge Neon described by the robbery victim. When police told her to put the gun down, officers say she refused to cooperate and threatened an officer with the gun. That officer fired one gunshot toward the suspect.

The female suspect was pronounced dead in the parking lot. HPD spokesman John Cannon says a weapon was recovered near that suspect's body.

Police also questioned a male at the complex.

Officers learned the Dodge Neon was reported stolen Dec. 3 and found ski masks inside along with items believed to belong to the robbery victim who contacted police.
