PASADENA, Texas – A registered sex offender was shot and killed by police early Monday after holding up a Denny’s restaurant in Pasadena, according to authorities.

The scene unfolded on Hwy 225 and Richey Road around 3 a.m.

A restaurant employee said a customer who had just left the restaurant came back in and held a gun to the night manager’s head.

The employee called police and at least three officers responded to the robbery in progress.

One unit pulled up at the front of the restaurant, and two more approached from behind the strip center next door to the east.

After getting the cash, police said the suspect fled the restaurant on foot and headed toward the strip center, where he ran into two of the officers.

One restaurant employee said he saw the suspect point a handgun in the direction of the two officers, who each opened fire.

The suspect was struck multiple times in the front torso area, and was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance personnel.

Police said the 43-year-old suspect is a registered sex offender whose identify is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. He had $280 in his possession.

Police said the suspect drove a white Dodge pickup truck to the scene which was reported stolen from Baytown on Sunday.

Police said the two officers involved will, in accordance with policy, be placed on administrative leave with pay pending the completion of routine administrative procedures. One officer is a 12-year veteran and the other is a rookie with about 5 months on the job.

Police said independent investigations are being conducted by the Harris County D.A. Shooting Team, the Medical Examiner’s Office, PPD Internal Affairs and Homicide Detectives as standard procedure.
