A man is in critical condition at a Houston hospital after a Harris County sheriff's deputy shot him while he was wielding a knife on a Channelview street this afternoon, officials said.

The injured man, whose name has not been released, was shot at least once and taken by a LifeFlight medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center, said Harris County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Christina Garza.

A deputy went to the 700 block of Lakeside in Channelview at 3:40 p.m. today after a caller reported seeing a suspicious man in the street with a knife, Garza said. The deputy arrived and saw the man in the roadway, still holding the knife. The deputy ordered the man numerous times to drop the knife, but he did not comply, Garza said.

At some point, the knife-wielding man approached the deputy, still holding the weapon, and the deputy shot him at least one time, Garza said. She could not say what part of the man's body was struck by the bullet. The deputy was not injured, she said.

Investigators are still trying to confirm the injured man's identity..

The sheriff's office homicide division is investigating the incident, along with the sheriff's office internal affairs division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
