A Harris County sheriff’s deputy shot a suspect in the hand Saturday night after the man tried to run him over, officials said.

The deputy was dispatched around 11 p.m. to the North Freeway near FM 1960 to investigate a car stopped on the road.

The deputy approached the car, opened the door, saw a gun on the man’s lap and moved to take it away, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, put the car in reverse and struck the deputy. The man then put the car in drive and tried to run over the deputy, who then fired several rounds, striking him in the hand, authorities said.

The car struck a barrier, and the man attempted to flee, officials said. The deputy Tased the man, who was then taken to an area hospital.
