HOUSTON—A suspect fled Harris County deputies in a hail of gunfire early Wednesday after nearly running over one of the officers with his SUV, investigators said.

Deputies responded to a man-down call in the 900 block of Cypress Station around 1 a.m., but said they could not find anyone hurt when they arrived. Instead, investigators said deputies spotted a suspicious man sitting in a Jeep Cherokee at the scene.

When they asked the man to step out of the vehicle, the man reversed the SUV in the direction of one of the deputies.

Investigators said the deputy fired a shot at the man, who then threw the Jeep into drive and accelerated. The deputy fired seven more shots, hitting the suspect three times.

Despite the shots, investigators said the suspect drove off in the Jeep and led deputies on a chase to an apartment complex in the 300 block of North Vista Drive.

During the pursuit, the suspect dumped two bags of marijuana out of the window, deputies said.

Once the suspect got to the complex, investigators said he bailed out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot.

The unmanned Jeep smashed into a patrol car.

A deputy eventually caught up with the suspect and subdued him with a Taser.

The suspect was taken to Ben Taub in stable condition.

Deputies said the suspect is facing felony evading charges, and additional charges could follow.

His identity was not yet known.
