HOUSTON – A suspected car burglar was shot by an off-duty Houston police officer Tuesday night after the officer caught the suspect in the act, according to HPD.

The officer said his personal vehicle was the target of the burglary, which occurred just after 10 p.m. at the Bellmeade Apartments on Legacy Park Drive.

Police said the officer was making his rounds as the apartment’s courtesy officer when he spotted the suspect inside his personal SUV.

When the officer approached the suspect and identified himself, police said the suspect fled.

The officer chased him through the complex on foot.

Investigators said when the suspect turned around and appeared to reach for something in his waistband, the officer opened fire.

The suspect suffered a single gunshot wound.

Police said the suspect was taken to Ben Taub, where he was last reported in stable condition Wednesday morning.

The suspect was not armed, investigators said.
