HOUSTON—A suspect was in critical condition Monday after he was shot by an HPD officer following a foot chase and struggle, police said.

Police said an HPD officer witnessed what he thought was a drug transaction between a man and a woman in the 4800 block of Laura Koppe around 2 a.m. While the officer was questioning the two, he said the man took off running. The officer called for backup and began to chase the suspect on foot.

Police said as the suspect was running, he turned and fired a revolver directly at the officer. The officer was not hit, but he said he could feel the bullet whiz past his head. The officer then tackled the suspect and the two began to wrestle, according to HPD.

A second officer arrived on the scene and found his fellow officer and the suspect struggling over the suspect’s weapon. The second officer ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, but the suspect instead pointed the gun at the head of the officer he was wrestling. The second officer, fearing for the safety of his coworker, shot the suspect once in the head.

The suspect was transported to Ben Taub Hospital. Neither officer was injured.
