HOUSTON – A Harris County sheriff’s deputy was shot during a bank robbery Tuesday, prompting Klein ISD officials to briefly put four nearby campuses on lockdown.

Deputy Mitchell Bettin was working security at the Preferred Bank in the 16600 block of Stuebner Airline near Cypresswood Drive.

Two armed robbers entered the bank around 1:45 p.m. while a third waited outside.

Bettin got into a shootout with the suspects and one of them shot him in the hand. Bettin, 44, was taken to Ben Taub Hospital. The deputy was conscious and alert as he was loaded into the ambulance.

Investigators said the deputy fired six rounds at the fleeing suspects, and struck at least one of them.

The wounded suspect was later arrested at LBJ Hospital where he'd gone for treatment.

The other two robbers got away.

Klein ISD briefly put Klein High School, Kleb Intermediate, Mittelstadt Elementary and the Annex on lockdown after the robbery.

Bettin has been with the sheriff's department since 1991.
