HOUSTON -- A man wounded by a Houston police officer is facing charges.

Jose Edgardo Rivera, 21, has been charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Houston police said Officer M.T. Hardt responded to a shooting in progress call near Washington Avenue and Thompson Street at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Several witnesses directed Hardt to Rivera's location in the 900 block of Thompson Street.

Rivera walked away when he saw Hardt, police said. Hardt told Rivera to stop and show his hands, but he refused, police said.

Detectives said Rivera went through a gate to a yard of a home and suddenly turned in Hardt's direction. Hardt opened fire, wounding Rivera in the shoulder, investigators said.

Rivera was treated at Ben Taub Hospital and released into police custody.

Hardt was not injured.
