A police officer shot and wounded a man in both legs during a confrontation Wednesday night in southwest Houston.

The shooting occurred outside a home at 16206 Alden Ridge about 10:40 p.m., said John Cannon, a spokesman for the Houston Police Department.

Cannon said the man, whose name has not been released, was wounded once in each of his legs by Officer M. Rivera.

The man was taken to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. Police did not release his condition but said he is expected to survive.

No other injuries were reported.

No charges have been filed in the case so far.

Cannon said Rivera and another patrol officer were dispatched to an assault at the home and saw a man standing in the driveway when they arrived. He appeared to be holding something in his hand.

The man then went inside the home. The officers knocked on the front door, but no one answered. They heard the garage door open and a woman screaming inside the house, pleading with someone to stop hitting her.

A side door on the home opened and the officers saw the woman and man, who went toward the rear of the house.

Cannon said Rivera saw him go into the backyard and climb a wooden fence. Rivera ordered him to stop, but the man refused. Rivera followed him, but could not clearly see one of the man’s hands, which appeared to be on his waistband.

When Rivera, who has been on the force since March 2009, hoisted himself up to look over the fence, he saw the man. The man raised his arm and turned toward the officer.

That’s when Rivera, in fear of his safety, fired two shots, hitting the man.

The man is the woman’s ex-boyfriend and does not live with her at the house, Cannon said.

As is customary in officer-involved shootings within city limits, HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs divisions will investigate the case. The Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office also will investigate it.
