HOUSTON – An HPD officer was forced to shoot a suspect in southwest Houston late Wednesday who refused to surrender during a domestic assault, according to police.

HPD officers responded to an assault-in-progress call at a house on Alden Ridge at Ambern around 11:50 p.m. The two officers arrived to find a man standing in the driveway and asked him to come over for questioning. The man refused, then bolted inside the house, police said. The officers then heard a woman yelling for help from the backyard.

One of the officers attempted to enter the backyard, but the gate was locked. He then stood on the fence and ordered the man to stop. Police said the suspect would not listen, and began to put his left hand inside his clothing.

The officer, fearing for his safety, opened fire, hitting the suspect once in the leg. The 22-year-old suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in stable condition. The 20-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with bruises on her face and swollen eyes.

Police said the suspect did not live at the home, but he and the woman have a child together.
