Houston police said the Officer R.O. Carreon has had past problems with people stealing his tires and taking things from his home on Broadstairs Street near Mercury Drive.

Investigators said Carreon heard the alarm on his pickup truck go off at about 2:30 a.m. He got out of bed and headed outside with a shotgun, detectives said.

Carreon got outside and discovered that his wife had already confronted a man, who was getting out of the pickup truck, police said.

Investigators said Carreon then remembered he had left a pistol in the pickup truck.

The man threatened to shoot Carreon's wife, and Carreon opened fire on the man, police said.

The man fled in a vehicle and was later found at LBJ Hospital being treated for a gunshot wound. His condition has not been released.

Detectives said the pistol Carreon left in his pickup truck has not been found. Officials have not said if it was Carreon's personal pistol or his service weapon.

Police said Carreon had recently been targeted by thieves. Rims were recently stolen off his pickup truck, officials said.

Neighbors said Carreon lives at the home with his wife, baby and mother-in-law.

Carreon will be on mandatory desk duty for three days. He's been with HPD since 2006.
