HOUSTON - Homicide investigators say an off-duty police officer shot a suspect in the driveway his northeast Houston home fearing that the alleged intruder would harm the homeowner's wife.

A spokesman for the Houston Police Department says the officer was inside his home on Broadstairs Street when heard the alarm on his truck had been activated and walked outside with a shotgun. When the off-duty officer walked out onto the porch, police say his wife was in the driveway and had already confronted the suspect.

Police say the officer, knowing he left a pistol in his pickup truck, watched the suspect walk out of the truck with his arms at an angle and walking toward his wife. Unsure if the suspect found the pistol, the officer fired the shotgun multiple times from the porch.

The suspect drove away from the home and was later found at LBJ Hospital with apparent non life-threatening injuries.

Police say the HPD homicide division, internal affairs division and Harris County District Attorney's Office will conduct an investigation since the shooting involved the officer, who has been with the department for more than four years.
