HOUSTON—An off-duty HPD officer opened fire on a suspect who was burglarizing his vehicle in northeast Houston early Tuesday, according to police.

Officer R.O. Carreon was at his home in the 10300 block of Broadstairs when he heard his truck alarm going off around 2:30 a.m.

He ran to retrieve his rifle, when he noticed his wife had already gone outside alone to investigate. Knowing that he left his handgun inside his truck, he rushed to her aid.

A suspect came out of the truck, pointing the officer’s handgun at a 90 degree angle toward his wife, police said.

Fearing for both their safety, the officer opened fire, shooting the suspect an unknown number of times before the suspect fled the scene.

Police said two suspects were later apprehended at LBJ hospital in connection with the crime. They had apparently driven there after the confrontation with the officer.

Officer Carreon is stationed at the South Central Patrol. He has been on the force since July 2006.

Neighbors said the officer had recently been the victim of another vehicle burglary.
