•Raw: Traffic stop ends with officer-involved shooting

HOUSTON – A man was in the hospital Saturday after a routine traffic stop in southwest Houston ended with an officer-involved shooting.

Police said an officer pulled over a white pickup truck with four males passengers on Southwest Freeway near Weslayan around 12:15 a.m. As the officer approached the truck, he thought the driver appeared to be intoxicated and ordered him out of the vehicle.

Authorities said as the driver made his way to the side of the road, he became agitated and reached for something in his waistband. He then lunged at the officer, prompting a physical altercation between the two. At one point, the officer was almost thrown over a retaining wall.

According to police, the suspect then started running back toward the truck as the officer ordered him to stop.

The officer eventually fired one shot, hitting the suspect in the lower back. He was transported to the hospital in stable condition and the three other passengers were detained for questioning. The officer was treated for minor scrapes and bruises at the scene.
