HOUSTON—A suspect in a carjacking, robbery and police chase was shot by an HPD officer in northeast Houston early Monday morning, investigators said.

It started when HPD responded to a carjacking near Tidwell and the Eastex Freeway around 1:30 a.m. The victim reported being forced to drive to a Wells Fargo bank along the west frontage road to withdraw cash from an ATM. The victim said the two suspects then fled the scene in the car, leaving the victim behind.

Police found the suspects in the vehicle in the 7100 block of Parker and gave chase. The chase ended several miles away when the suspects jumped out of the car at the Las Palmas Apartments, police said.

Officers were able to locate the suspects with the help of a police helicopter. Officer C. E. Dorton, a two-year veteran, said one of the suspects made a sudden move to his belt as if reaching for a weapon, so he opened fire.

The officer fired several rounds, hitting the suspect in the leg. The suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other suspect was also captured. He was not harmed.

Houston police said they were still on the lookout for additional suspects who may have been traveling in a second car. Investigators were also working to determine if the suspects were involved in other recent armed robberies in the area.
